Mohammad Ali Eltaher was a good friend of Quwatli when the two men were exiled in Cairo in the 1920s. Quwatli was a young nationalist in the anti-French movement while Eltaher was publisher of the popular periodical Asshoura, which advocated liberating Syria and Palestine from French and British coloninialism. He fled Egypt after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 and resided in Damascus, where he remained close to Quwatli when the Syrian President returned to power in 1955.
