First Lieutenant Assef Shawkat in the early 1980s

Assef Shawkat rose to fame when he married Hafez al-Assad's daughter Bushra in 1994. He became Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces then Deputy Defense Minister during the era of Bashar al-Assad. Shawkat was killed along with top security officials in Damascus in July 2012.
